Advice from Dr Bernie Siegel……Advice worth sharing!
We posed the following question to some leaders in the caregiving community here is the response from Dr Bernie Siegel:
If you could give a caregiver only ONE piece of advice for their self-care, what would it be?
I am a caregiver for my wife, 50 years of MS.
When going through hell, ask yourself: what am I to learn from this experience? Learn to surrender; you can’t fix everything.
OK Now What? A Caregiver’s Guide to What Matters ( Head to Wind Publishing 2014) addresses ways to achieve self-care through experienced-based practical solutions to potential problems, including scheduling respite breaks and ways to maintain boundaries with family members.
Dr Bernie Siegel nationally and internationally renowned physician and pediatric surgeon is now retired. He founded ECaP (Exceptional Cancer Patients) a non-profit organization providing resources, individual and group therapies using a person’s drawings and feelings. He has written several books. His first, Love, Medicine and Miracles (Harper Collins, 1988), is about the relationship between the patient and the healing process.
